Will the Sensors (FOB’s) work properly if they are kept in a pocket or do they need to be clipped externally?

Yes, the sensors will work if it is kept in your pocket. However, we recommend you wear the sensor clipped to your side or on your PFD for optimal performance, particularly with children.

I threw my sensor (FOB) in a glass of water to test it. The system did not trigger – is there something wrong?

No, nothing is wrong. The system is actually working as designed. When you put the sensor in a glass of water there is not enough water to absorb the signal. When you fall into a body of water such as lake, river, stream, or ocean, there is plenty of water to cancel the signal as opposed to a glass of water. The system is designed to recognize the difference between falling into the water and getting washed over by a wave while driving. This is done with our patented software so that you do not lose control of the boat in rough water. If you want to test the sensor in water, you need more than 8 gallons of water and you need to hold the sensor so it doesn’t rest on the bottom of the bucket.

Do the sensors (FOB’s) only work by distance?

No, they work based on both distance and submersion in a body of water. If you fall off your boat into the water it will be triggered when the sensor is submerged because communication between the host and the sensor has been broken. The sensor can be splashed by a wave and will not trigger the kill switch. The sensor must be submerged in a large body of water to activate the kill switch and shut off the motor.

Is the Autotether Marine applicable to sailboats?

It isn’t the best product for sailboats. We sell the Autotether Screamer for sailboats or larger motorboats. The Screamer sounds a loud 105 decibel alarm if someone wearing a sensor falls overboard into the water and the other crew members are below deck. In addition, if you are towing a dinghy the systems also works based on distance. If the dinghy breaks loose the horn will sound when the dinghy is more than 150 feet from the boat. Many systems have also been sold to monitor children and pets in and around pools, beaches and campsites.

What if I have 2 kill switches?

We can sell you a kill switch and you just need to have the 2 engines wired into the single kill switch. Call Technical Support for assistance.

What clip should I order if I have an Evinrude motor?

The Autotether Marine comes with the Mercury and Yamaha clips. The OMC1 clip is the best suited clip for the Evinrude motor and must be ordered on line. See the on-line store for pricing. There is an explanation for the operation of a Yamaha plunger type kill switch. How does it work with the toggle switch on my Mercury Optimaxe? Our product does work on a Mercury side mount kill switch. We have a different clip that fits on the toggle switch and pulls the switch to the off position when activated. See the on-line store for pricing.

How do I install my Yamaha clip onto the kill switch?

The Yamaha clip attaches below the button. Do not try to attach it to the button part because the clip may break. Call Technical Support if you have any questions or difficulty.
